Shock-excited molecular gas in the nucleus of M58 observed with JWST

Observations with JWST reveal that the hot molecular gas in the nucleus of the M58 galaxy is excited primarily by low-velocity shocks, with a minor contribution from the radiation of the active nucleus. The study shows that even low-luminosity AGN can generate measurable feedback on the interstellar medium and affect the gas reservoirs in nuclear regions.
